Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage is the classic, therapeutic technique designed to relax the entire body by using long, gliding strokes, kneading, and friction to increase blood flow, ease muscle tension, and improve flexibility.

Usually lasting 60–90 minutes, it involves using lotions or oils to massage the back, limbs, and shoulders while the client is draped on a table. The goal of a Swedish massage is ‘spa-like’ relaxation.

What to Expect During a Swedish Massage

  • Atmosphere: A quiet, comfortable room, with soothing music playing in the background. Hydraulic tables, and additional bolstering will make sure your body is perfectly at ease. You will be interviewed briefly, then the therapist will leave the room.
  • Sensations: The pressure is typically light or medium but can be adjusted to be firmer if desired. Always feel free to communicate any concerns with your therapist. They are here to help!

Swedish massage commonly employs five core strokes— Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Tapotement, and Vibration—to improve circulation, soothe nerves, and release muscle tension. These techniques blend long, gliding motions with kneading and stimulating movements to promote overall relaxation.

  • Effleurage (Gliding): Long, smooth, flowing strokes, often with palms, used to warm up muscles, apply lotion, and encourage blood flow toward the heart.
  • Petrissage (Kneading): A deeper, kneading motion that lifts, squeezes, and rolls muscles to release tension, break up knots, and increase circulation.
  • Friction (Rubbing): Deep, circular, or transverse movements targeting specific tight, fibrous, or knotted areas to increase blood flow and break down scar tissue.
  • Tapotement (Percussion): Rhythmic tapping, hacking, cupping, or beating movements that stimulate the nervous system, increase circulation, and invigorate muscles.
  • Vibration (Shaking): Rapid shaking or trembling movements applied with hands or fingertips, designed to relax muscles, soothe nerves, and release tension.
