Dry Needling

Dry needling is a musculoskeletal pain treatment in which a healthcare provider inserts thin, solid filiform needles into specific muscle areas called myofascial trigger points to relieve pain and improve movement. The term “dry” refers to the fact that no medication is injected—unlike trigger point injections, which contain a local anesthetic or other drugs.

How It Works

Trigger points are taut, tender bands of muscle tissue that can cause localized pain or referred pain to other areas of the body. They often develop after injury, overuse, or prolonged poor posture. When a trigger point is stimulated with a needle, it can:

  • Cause a muscle twitch response, helping to release tension.
  • Improve blood flow to flush out metabolic waste and restore normal muscle function.

Trigger the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers.

Dry needling is used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Neck, back, and shoulder pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Tendonitis and repetitive strain injuries
  • Post-surgical or post-injury pain
  • Reduced range of motion from muscle tightness
